Display Menu App Reviews

102 Customer Reviews:

This application has usability issues that leave one wondering if it either does not work properly, or is purposely missing features in the free version. These issues are: 1) It does not properly indicate the current resolution set under System Preferences, Displays, Resolution, Scaled, that is, the current resolution is not checked in Display Menu. 2) It does not detect all the available resolutions. For example, using the built-in display on a MacBook Pro (Retina, 15-inch, Mid 2014), the highest Scaled setting More Space (1980 x 1200) is not available in the resolutions list of Display Menu. Second guessing which setting is in effect is a huge usability problem.

Was driving me nuts not being able to select a particular resolution when connecting via VNC. Using this app, I was able to select the correct resolution for my session. Thank you x 100!

This sets resolution and it will remain in effect until you decide to change it. So it’s not a temporary resolution change, I like that. It has some resolutions available that Apple doesn’t give us access to. One caveat, it may not be as sharp, and that may be why those resolutions are not provided by Apple. But many are sharp and it was well worth the minimal price to have access to other screen sizes and to be able to set them so easily.

Fixed a problem in 2 seconds that had been bothering me all day!

I couldn’t get my IMac to send a decent display resolution to an OLD monitor. This app fixed the problem in two clicks. Thanks a million!

This app exactly does what it claims to be capable of. I am very happy with this app and its helpful also. My job requires me to change screen resolution in every now and then and it helps me to do that in an easy way. Thanks for making such an app.

I have a wide screen monitor that I’m using with my iMac as a secondary display. Unfortunately the Display settings seem to have gotten a whole lot less useful in OS X and there wasn’t any way to fix the stretched perportions (even after holding down ALT when I click on “Scaled” in the Resolution section). It is really sad that I had to turn to an app to get the functionality that should already be incorporated in the OS. That said, this app is very useful and simple. I was able to fix the issure in seconds and move on with my projects.

I purchased the Pro version upgrade when installing Display Menu on my new 5k iMac. The options available seem to not be correct, showing the full 5k resolution setting as non-retina among others, so I sent in a support request 2 weeks ago and have had no response.

I’ve used this app briefly and quickly updated to pro to support the developer. I have a monitor that I change from horizontal to vertical mode occasionally so a display rotation option built into the dropdown would be extremely useful (vs. going into the display pref page every time).

Is supposed to “list all available resolutions” for a monitor. It lists NO 16:9 resolutions for my 1920x1080 monitor. I’ve repeatedly asked for support on the website and received no response. I paid for the Pro version, but it is money wasted.

Sure it’s only $2, but I wish I could get my money back. Their screenshot shows the upgraded app will provide higher resolutions for your display. NOT TRUE! You dont get anything extra when you purchase the upgrade. Just use the free version of this app.

I recently upgraded to a new MacBook Pro with 10.11 and was having problems with an external monitor. I accidentally selected an incompatible resolution with my external monitor, which caused the external monitor to go black. No matter what I would do, I could never get to the display resolution dialog box on the external monitor. The free version of Display Menu was perfect as it let me select the correct resolution for my external montior from my MacBook Pro. Display Menu is a simple, yet powerful app!

Nice and convenient for use with vnc connecting from a smaller screened client, but two glaring problems (including pro version): - On Retina iMac, selecting any high resolutions results in teeny-tiny fonts and windows. So small to be unusable. - On Mac Pro with no display connected (headless), higher resolutions are unavailable (e.g. 4K). The highest is 1920x1080.

This is *just* what the doctor ordered. I need to take non-Retina screenshots on my MBP (scaling won’t do), and the free version of this enabled the full resolution without a fuss, and I didn’t even have to disable System Integrity Protection! I almost instantly upgraded to the Pro version, mostly because without it you can’t use the menu to go back to the “native” Retina resolutions offered by Mac OS X, although you can go back to it in display preferences. This is a little unclear in the documentation, but shouldn’t be a deal killer for you if you’re contemplating the free version. However as an app developer myself, I need to go back and forth all the time and so the upgrade was worth it. Actually the upgrade offers bookmarks, too. Now I’ve got the two resolutions I most need: native from non-Retina screenshots, and and my preferred “More Space” Retina resolution. I’ve not tried the AppleScript yet, but assuming it works I won’t come back and deduct a star. Trying this feature actually kind of excites me because I use AppleScript within my own apps to take the screenshots, and so switching resolution in my existing screenshot script is just another added bonus. I’m REALLY glad I found this app. No more having to VPN into one of my Mac minis in order to take non-Retina screen shots.

I run a Mac Mini (2012) server in a rack and was using a fit-Headless 4K HDMI dongle to remotely access the mini at 2560 x 1600. After upgrading to El Capitan I only have limited resolutions through System Preferences now (even if I Option-click). After reading the reviews and downloading this app I couldn’t be happier. I have easy access to a wide variety of screen resolutions. I highly recommend this app!!

Great

It is really simple to switch to native resolution(2880) on a retina MBP using this app. Thanks a lot!!!

This app works great and was a life saver, however, it seems completly ridiculous that this apps functionality is not integrated into the operating system. Changing the display resolution on different monitors is something you have been able to do easily in windows since XP.

I paid for the pro version of this program. This program hasn’t been updated in a long time. It used to work flawlessly. Now I find that it has issues. Basically, I had the resolution cranked up on my MacBook Pro 13”, and my eyes starting getting worse, so I’ve decided to bring the resolution down a little bit. Unfortunately, sometimes the computer doesn’t remember what resolution I want to stay at (1680x1050). It sometimes defaults to a higher resolution which screws up all of my windows and then I have to reposition and resize everything. I’ve written to the developer 4 times with no replies. Judging from the fact that it hasn’t been updated in more than a year and they don’t reply, I would say use this program at your own risk.

My menu bar display icon failed to show up recently, so I had to get this app to patch the leak in the OS. I shouldnt have to order add-ons for what the system should provide in the first place! Using 10.8.5 (mountain lion) system on an MB Pro 15". Planning to upgrade soon anyway… I gave it 4 stars because havent used it long enough, but works.

TL;DR - using a headless Mac Pro via Screen sharing this app allows me to set the resolution to a variety of choices, just none that fit the many 24” monitors I own (1920x1200). 1920x1080 works, so better than nothing. I have a 5K iMac with a 24” 1920x1200 monitor attached. I often use the extra monitor for remote use of my older Mac Pro, but because it is headless the system preferences only lists 1280x1024. I was referred to this app by a maker of a dummy HDMI dongle to help me solve the issue. 1920x1200 was not an option in the free version, so I purchased the Pro version. Still not an option. The Pro version allows using scripting resolution changes, but that doesn’t work either. I reached out via Twitter to the developer and got a near instant response (5 stars for that!), but his suggestion was to buy an HDMI dongle... So - I use 1920x1080. The loss of 230,400 pixels is less than running at 1280x1024, but I can’t figure out why other 16:10 resolutions are listed as choices, but not the common 1920x1200.

No quite there

All but one resolution is blurry on my MacBook Retina.
